Climate Action Networking Reception 2011
Under the theme “Partnerships for a Green Economy”, the Climate Action Networking Reception (now re-branded for 2012 as the Sustainable Innovation Forum) took place on the 7th December, 2011, at one of Durban’s most iconic venues – the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
A gathering of 350 delegates took part in the exclusive, invite only reception which was organised in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Headline sponsor – Nedbank. The reception was hosted alongside the official COP17 proceedings also included Scania (who provided sustainable transport for delegates), New Holland Agriculture, Suzlon, MTN (who purchased renewable energy certificates to the value of one megawatt hours of green electricity on behalf of the delegates) and Schneider Electric.
Preceding the reception, Climate Action, in partnership with ICLEI and the World Green Building Council (WGBC) hosted a lively and engaging high-level debate on “Cities of the Future”. Chaired by Gino Van Begin, Deputy Secretary General, ICLEI, the debate examined the growth and development of sustainable urban areas and infrastructure; an area of growing importance in the run-up to the defining 2012 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The reception was opened with a welcome from Achim Steiner, UNEP’s Executive Director, and also included addresses from Mike Brown, Chief Executive, Nedbank, Professor Karanja, Executive Director, Green Belt movement (who paid tribute to the late Professor Wangari Maathai), and His Excellency Mr. Salvador Namburete, Minister of Energy for Mozambique, and Chairman of the African Union.
The reception concluded with the sunset announcement of the Billion Tree Campaign with HSH Prince Albert of Monaco signing the project to Felix Finkbeiner of the ‘Plant for the Planet’ campaign.
